RE: [biochar] Re: Floating seaweed and PBR

Mike,

Your points about marketing of biochar from seaweed are good. But they sidestep the primary objective that is “Get rid of the stuff.” The biochar is a secondary benefit. Potentially an important and profitable secondary benefit. But we must not make the financial viability of charcoal to be the determining factor.

The same applies to the undesirable excessive wood and underbrush associated with forest fires and homes lost.

PBR is pyrolytic biomass reduction. Use pyrolysis to get rid of the undesirable biomass, on land or on water. A 10% char yield (dry weights) or even 5% would be acceptable. Even if 0% (no char production) occurred, the solutions are still needed, and biomass reduction might be done without pyrolysis (but nobody has that type of solution either.).

I am working on larger and affordable pyrolysis devices because of the need to get rid of excessive surplus biomass by using pyrolysis (which happens to leave lovely charcoal behind). Making good progress recently. I will soon need either more money (investors welcome) or co-participants who will cover the costs for a next generation prototype pyrolyzer that they keep.

kim,

it seems to me that given the scale of the seaweed flotila, it would be prudent to develop a market for the seaweed char before one makes any at scale……

what does the market(s) look like that could afford a ocean based seaweed conversion process……?

is charring the seaweed the best processing approach to meet the market needs…..?

my 2 cents

mike
