Char Production Gathering at Aprovecho Research Center
Description:
Assembling on Friday, 19 August 2016, during the final hours of Summer Stove Camp at Aprovecho, Dr. Paul Anderson, Dr. Paul Taylor, and others will lead a two-day gathering focused on a broad array of char production technologies and related devices. This is a hands-on experience with discussions, experiments, and development of farm-size char-making units (DIY pyrolizers and commercially available units costing less than $3000), barrel-size char makers, kilns, retorts, flame curtain pyrolysis, TLUD cookstoves, and more. Device-related considerations include size, safety, construction materials, designs (cones, pyramids, covered barrel – C4 kiln, earth pits, etc.), labor of operation, quenching alternatives, fuel options, yield of char, char characteristics, and uses of available heat.
On Friday evening, all participants will be treated to a meal featuring food cooked by char-making stoves.
